Christian Living Update--July 29, 2007

Friends:

Good evening, everyone! I hope all of you’ve had a good weekend. We have lots of news today. First off, I want to say a big welcome to Soo Battle, who visited our class this morning. Great to have you with us, Soo! As soon as I get your email address, I’ll be adding you to our list! We were delighted to have you with us. Come back and see us next Sunday morning!

Next, let’s be sure and thank the Buhners for bringing our donuts and kolaches this morning. We appreciate it, Shawn and Shelley! Next week, us Nulls are on deck to bring us some grub.

COME ONE, COME ALL! Mark your calendars. We will be gathering for our Back-to-School Cookout on August 26th at 4:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Buhner home. They live at 201 Ranchgate in McGregor (driving directions to follow). Thank you, Shawn and Shelley, for opening your home to us! I think this will be a terrific time for fun and fellowship with our group. I would like for us to use this opportunity to welcome everyone back after a busy summer of traveling (In other words, this is our annual “Get back to church!” event). To the left of this message (below the Robbie poll), you will see a link that reads “Christian Living Cookout Sign-Up Sheet”. Please take a look at this sheet and let me know what you would like to bring. If everything is taken (which most things are), bring something else that you think would be good. We want to have a big turnout for this Cookout, so please mark your calendars! We expect you to be there!

PRAYERS AND PRAISES

Next, let’s get to our prayers and praises. Please pray for the Livelys. They are now taking care of two precious little girls. We saw them in person this morning in class, and they are beautiful! They need lots of prayers and help from our group. Sean and Cece can still use all of the following items: toys, diapers, clothes for a 3 month old and an 18 month old, baby food (contact Cece for details regarding what kind), bottles, and a two-child stroller. They will need other items as we go along as well. Please consider blessing the Livelys and these little girls by helping out. These girls desperately need the blessings that a community like ours can provide. In addition to giving, we need to pray for everyone involved with these two young girls. They have lived difficult lives already. Praise God for the Livelys for taking them in. Please pray that God will be with all of us as we help them out. Pray for healing for both girls. If you need the Lively’s address in order to take something to them, please email me. Dana will be contacting everyone soon about signing up to take meals to Sean and Cece (she needs to talk with Cece first), so please be on the lookout for that.

On other prayers, we need to continue to pray for the Bartrams as their big day draws near. We’re praying for you, Pam and Brian!

We were glad to see Ben and Teresa in class this morning. Let’s be sure to continue to pray for everyone in Ben’s family following the death of his grandmother. Pray for comfort during this time of grieving.

Please pray for the Ericksons as they make some decisions about a 5 month old baby that Mary has been helping. Pray for wisdom and discernment for Vince and Mary. Pray, also, for Vince as he begins a new post as a radio talk show host in the mornings from 7-9 a.m. That’s right, Vince works from sunup to midnight! Congratulations, Vince! Pray that God will be with Vince as he takes on this new, important responsibility. Pray for steadiness and lots of energy for Vince.

Jenny LaSeur brought a praise this morning that her cousin Katie’s surgery went well. We still, however, need to pray for Katie as she recovers. Pray that God will be with her every step of the way.

Cathy Schneider has asked us to pray for the family of one of her former students, Christopher Coleman. Christopher passed away this past week from brain cancer. Please pray for strength and comfort for everyone who is grieving Christopher’s death.

Erica Sullivan brought a praise this morning that one of her good friends has given birth to a baby boy! Praise God for this news! The young man’s name is Collin Joseph. Pray that Collin will get off to a good start on this side of heaven.

Let’s continue to pray for Robbie! Be sure to check out his blog to follow his journey. Pray that Robbie and the entire group he’s with will be safe and that they will have a successful trip. Pray, also, for Franci and Carter while Robbie is away. We’re praying for you, Franci! Please let us know if we can do anything to help you.

Click here for "Robbie in China"

Tatum Buhner is headed to a camp this week. Ask God to be with her while she is away. Shawn and Shelley also will be traveling during the next couple of weeks. Please pray for safe travel for the Buhners.

The Mays have asked that we pray for the Lands family. Mrs. Lands, a neighbor of the Mays, passed away this past week. Please pray for her husband and for her entire family during this time.

Joann Dominguez would like for us to pray for her friend Stephanie. Stephanie has been going through some difficult times with her marriage. Please ask God to touch this situation and help Stephanie and her husband to make good decisions.

Also with the Dominguez family, Joann would like for us to pray for them as a court date of August 13th draws closer. This will be an important day for their family. Pray for wisdom and discernment for the judge who will be deciding what is best for their daughter Mariah. Pray that God will be with Mariah and the Dominguez family between now and August 13th.

Franci Rogers has asked that we pray for Gaynor Yancey, one of her friends in Social Work. Gaynor’s mother is not doing well at all right now. Please pray for comfort for her and for strength for Gaynor.

Last but not least, our little Corbin is headed to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist on Tuesday afternoon. He has had lots of ear infections lately, and we may be headed to the well-known tube surgery. Please pray that we will do what it takes to get Corbin’s ear infections under control.

---------------

I think that covers our prayers, praises, and news for now, everyone. I hope that all of you picked up some good ideas this morning in our discussion about Warren’s chapter on depression. I know how serious a topic this is, and we only had time to scratch the surface. Please know that our community is here to help anyone who is struggling with anxiety or depression! Our community, and more importantly God, is here to help!

I plan to put this in a separate message (so it doesn’t get lost in this one), but our topic next week will be the question “How Can I Live Above Average?”. In short, this chapter is about excellence. I think it will raise some important questions for us. If you have time, please read pages 63-75 in the Warren book. Since I know nothing about excellence (or being excellent), I will need lots of help from all of you, my fellow committee members!

That’s all for now, everyone. Oh, one more thing. Please thank God for all of the wonderful things that he is doing with our class. When Dana and I started this class 5 years ago, I could not have imagined having as many wonderful people involved as we have now. Please ask God to continue to bless our class!

Blessings,

Wes and Dana

Greetings from Calvin College! Calvin is in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan. (Grand Rapids is known as "GR" around these parts, as I've learned today!) After three long hours on an American Eagle jet (that’s right, an American Eagle), I made it safely.

I am writing to remind you of what we will discuss in class this Sunday morning. If you have time, please take a look at pages 43-61 in God's Answers to Life's Difficult Questions. Our question for the week will be "How Can I Defeat Depression?". I promise that our discussion will lead to happiness and not depression! Seriously, I think Warren has some very good advice for us.

Hope the rest of the week goes well for all of you. See you Sunday morning!

God bless,

Wes

Christian Living Update--July 15, 2007

Dear Friends:

Good afternoon, all! Well, Corbin is asleep, so I better take advantage of this opportunity to get our update written. Thanks to us Nulls for bringing the donuts this morning! Way to go, us. Next week, the Buhners are in charge. Thanks for taking care of us, Buhners!

BABY STUFF FOR THE LIVELYS: If you can donate any baby stuff to the Livelys, please contact Dana at jnull@hot.rr.com. They need all the help we can give them!

The only announcement I have today is about “JBUG” (see Amy Nicholson for details—this is a ladies only event!). The next JBUG get-together will take place on August 19, 2007. Put the date on your calendars, ladies!

Let’s get to our prayers and praises:

There are lots of people traveling this week. Please pray for safe travel for: the VanZees (who are off to Missouri), the Rogers (who are off to Disneyland), the Ericksons (who are in Oklahoma), the Mays (who are headed to New Braunfels), Amy Nicholson and the Nicholson girls (who are headed to Wichita Falls and then on to Houston), Jen and Emily Burney (who are traveling to Canada), and the Ramsdells (who are headed to Fredericksburg). I hope I’m not forgetting someone! Oh, I’m headed to Michigan on Thursday for a conference. I will be home Saturday. Please pray for safe travel for everyone who is out of town. This is obviously the time of year for family vacations!

Jenny LaSeur has asked us to pray for her cousin Katie. Katie will be undergoing thyroid cancer surgery tomorrow. Please pray for a successful surgery and for healing for Katie.

We have a couple of prayers for Melody and her family. They are looking for a new home, so please pray for that. We also need to pray for Elise, Melody’s daughter. Elise has been missing her grandmother, who died about a year ago. Please ask God to be with Elise.

Let’s continue to pray for Sean and Cece Lively. They will be getting their two little ones on August 1st. Please ask God to bless the Livelys and their growing family!

Also on the baby front, please pray for Brian and Pam Bartram. Pam is due on August 11th! Please ask God to be with her and their new little one, who will be here soon. We’re praying for you guys, Pam and Brian!

Please pray for all of the construction that is going on at Baylor. There is lots to be done in time for the school year to begin. Ask God to be with everyone who is helping to get things ready to go. And, oh yeah, don’t forget to pray for our friend Brian who is in charge! Pray that parents, students, faculty, and everyone else will understanding everything that it takes to do all of this construction in such a short amount of time.

Let’s praise God for Jackson Jacque! The Jacques baptized Jackson this morning during the 11:00 service. Way to go, Jacques! Let’s be sure and thank God for this great decision.

Shelley Buhner has asked us to pray for a little girl named Tessa. Tessa is the daughter of Shelley’s step-sister. Tessa had a seizure recently, and the family is worried that it could be epilepsy. Please ask God to be with Tessa and her family. Pray for continued positive news for Tessa.

Let’s continue to pray for the Mays as they work to sell their new home. They also recently made a decision to build a home as well. Please ask God to be with the Mays during this time of transition (and, get this: if we can get the Mays to add another 2000 or 3000 square feet to their new home, we’ll host future Christian Living Christmas parties at their house!).

Bernie Hookham has asked us to pray for Madison, the little girl who is in Cook’s hospital. She did not have a good week this past week. Ask God to be with everyone who is helping Madison.

We need to continue to pray for Ben Sullivan’s grandmother. She will be having surgery this week. Ask God to be with her as she recovers. Please also pray for Ben. He is taking off from work this week to be with his grandma.

Gabe Dominguez has asked that we pray for a little baby named Carlos. Carlos has been having some trouble breathing. Ask God to be with him and to help him to feel better soon. Pray that Carlos will be able to go home from the hospital this week.

Oops---Corbin’s waking up. More later.....

Okay I’m back. Dana and Raegan are now home—two hours later!

Last but not least, please continue to pray for the Saxon family. The funeral service for Paul Saxon last Tuesday was simply incredible. To read more about Paul’s story, including the remarks that Terrill and Leigh made at the funeral, click on this link. The Saxons have shown a tremendous amount of hope and courage throughout the last 4 1/2 years. They continue to need our prayers for strength.

I think that takes care of our prayers and praises this Sunday. Dana and I hope that all of you have a great week. See you next Sunday morning!

Christian Living Update--July 15, 2007

Dear Friends:

Good evening, all. Well, the heat has arrived at last. Despite the hot day, I hope that all of you have had a good Sunday. First off, we want to say a big welcome to Sean and Cece Lively who visited our class this morning. We were delighted to have you guys, Sean and Cece! I do hope that you will come back and see us again next week.

Next, I want to thank the Mays (and Jennifer in particular!) for bringing our donuts today. We appreciate you, Jennifer! Next week, us Nulls are in charge. How about Bush’s chicken?!

REMINDER ABOUT AUGUST 16TH! I want to remind all of you that we will be having a Back to School Cookout at the home of Shawn and Shelley Buhner. The event will take place on August 16th beginning at about 3:00 p.m. (but more details later!). Please put this afternoon on your calendar. I think that all of us will enjoy spending some time together. Thank you again for doing this for us, Shawn and Shelley! We do appreciate it! (By the way, rumor has it that Steve Ramsdell is planning to make a guest appearance in his fluorescent pink Speedo, but don’t tell anyone. We want a big turnout for this event.)

PRAYERS AND PRAISES
Let’s get to our prayers and praises:

Of course, let’s continue to pray for the Saxon family. Their faith in Christ has been nothing short of incredible during this last 4 1/2 years. Many, many people from our class have been touched by their story. Please pray for healing and for the Paul Saxon celebration service that will take place Tuesday morning. May God bless this incredibly strong family.

http://www.saxonreport.blogspot.com/

Elizabeth Nemec has asked us to pray for her sister, Rachel. She had her baby this past week. Her name is Olivia Page. I believe that both baby and mommy are doing well. Praise God for this new little one!

Kayla Jacque would like for us to pray for her grandmother, Lucille. She is currently in the hospital. Please pray for her healing and for return home soon.

We have a praise today that Ben and Teresa Sullivan are celebrating seven years of marriage—and today is the day! Congratulations, Ben and Teresa. May God be with you guys for another terrific 7 years and more!

Teresa Sullivan also has asked us to pray for patience for her as she works to put her classroom back together. She has lots of work to do and needs our prayers as she begins the new school year.

Vince and Mary Erickson are headed to Oklahoma to visit Vince’s family this week. Please pray for their safe travel. We also need to pray for the Ericksons as they consider some good job options. Pray for wisdom and discernment as they make decisions.

Shawn and Tatum Buhner returned home this afternoon from several days out of town. Please pray for them as they return to action here in Waco.

We also need to pray for the Buhners as Shelley looks at some new possibilities with her job as well. Let’s be sure to pray for wisdom and discernment for them as they make some important decisions.

Also on the Buhner front, we need to pray for Allison Mabry, Shelley’s sister. She is currently in Australia and will be traveling to several countries for many months. She will return home in December. Please pray for Allison while she is away on her travels.

The Livelys have some very important weeks and months ahead. We need to pray for them as they welcome two adopted babies, Camry and Callie, into their home. Please pray for strength, patience, and God’s grace as the Livelys make a home for these two little girls. We are praying for you guys, Sean and Cece!

Bernie Hookham has asked us to continue to pray for Madison. She is the little girl who is in Cook’s Hospital in Forth Worth. She is only 45 days old and is struggling with Noonan’s disease. Please ask God to touch this little girl and find a way for her to get home and begin the long road to healing.

We need to say a praise for a terrific VBS week! Praise God for everyone who volunteered to help. What a great turnout it was! Let’s also be sure and thank Sandy Williams, Stefanie Bunting, Joann Dominguez, and all of the many, many other church workers who helped to make VBS a success once again. Praise God for you guys!

The May clan is headed to South Padre Island this week for a little getaway (rumor has it that Steve is also working, but I’m not sure that I buy this news! A conference in South Padre?!). Please pray for safe travel and for relaxation for the Mays.

Also on the travel front, the VanZees are headed to Missouri this week for a VanZee family reunion. Please pray for safe travel for them as well. We also need to pray for the VanZees as they get closer and closer to welcoming a new baby into their homes. They will soon be approved for a new little one. Please ask God to be with this entire process. We’re praying for you guys, Brian and Jill!

-------------

I think that concludes our prayers and praises for this week, everyone. I HAVE ONE LAST IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Rumor has it that the Livelys may need some baby stuff. If so, I think some people in our class could truly help them out! Sean and CeCe, I know, for starters, that us Nulls have a high chair that you guys can have! Dana will be talking with Sean and CeCe this week. More details to come later.

Last but not least, I hope that all of you are enjoying the Warren book. I think it is a quite readable and discussable book for us. Next week, we will be discussing Chapter 2, which addresses the question: “How Can I Rebound From Failure?”. We look forward to discussing this chapter with all of you next week!

God bless,

Wes and Dana

Christian Living Update--July 8, 2007

Class Friends:

Good evening, everyone! I hope this message finds all of you doing well. I am here at home with Corbin (who is sacked out!), and Dana is at church with many other people on a busy VBS evening. First off, I want to say how pleased we were to welcome two new couples to our class this morning: Brian and Pam Bartram and Matt and Beth Ramsdell. Great to have you guys, Bartrams and Ramsdells! We look forward to seeing all of you again next week. I promise to try and do better with the jokes!

Next, I want to say a big thank you to Vince and Mary Erickson for bringing our snacks this morning. We appreciate it, Ericksons! And they even did this for us when Mary was helping a friend with a broken down car. Way to go, Ericksons! Next week, Steve and Jennifer May are in charge. Thanks, Mays!

PRAYERS AND PRAISES

Let’s go ahead and get to our prayers and praises for this week:

We need to pray that God will be with everyone who is involved with VBS this week, especially the kids. Thank God for all of the volunteers who are dedicating their time! Ask God to touch every child who walks through the doors at church this week.

I ask that all of you please continue to pray for the Saxon family. Pray for strength for all of them and for healing for Paul. Read more here. They need our prayers.

http://www.saxonreport.blogspot.com/

Shelley Buhner brought a praise this morning that Amy Raney’s job situation in San Antonio has worked out quite well. Praise God for this great news! Please continue to pray for the Raneys as they make the transition to San Antonio. Raneys, you know we expect to see you guys one more time before you hit the highway!

Also on the Buhner front, Shelley would like for us to pray for Shawn and Tatum. Both of them are out of town this week. Pray that Tatum will make good decisions while she is staying with her cousins. Pray, also, for Shelley while she is here with little Nash.

We need to pray for Franci Rogers’ family. Franci’s Great Aunt, Delores, passed away last week at the age of 85. Pray that God will be with Franci’s family during this time of mourning. Pray also for everyone as they travel to the funeral (including Franci who leaves on Friday).

Vince E. brought a praise/prayer request this morning that his mom will be turning 80 soon! On top of that, Vince’s parents will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in a couple of weeks. Praise God for their wonderful marriage! Vince has asked that we continue to pray for his parents as well as for everyone who will be traveling to the big celebration.

Jennifer May would like for us to pray for her friend Rachel. Rachel’s grandmother passed away last week. The funeral will be this week. Please pray for Rachel’s entire family during this difficult time.

Teresa Sullivan brought a praise this morning that little Hunter will turn 5 soon! Please ask God to be with Hunter on his special day. Teresa also brought a praise that she passed her recent ESL test. Way to go, Teresa! She is good to go for the next school year.

Jennifer Fadal has asked that we pray for some friends of theirs who are looking to adopt. Please ask God to be with the situation and help everything work out well for the baby and these parents who desperately want things to work out for them as well.

Also on the Fadal front, their family will be traveling to Port Aransas later this week for a family vacation. Please ask God to be with the Fadals as they travel.

Also on the baby front, we need to continue to pray for the VanZees and the Ericksons as they work through their paper pregnancies (these most certainly count as well, I must say!). Please ask God to be with both of these terrific families as they look forward to welcoming a new member of the family into their homes.

Joann Dominguez has asked that we pray for her search for new helpers in the nursery. Joann has big plans for the nursery. She would like to add some new people who do some special things with our little ones. Please ask God to bless everyone who is working to make what we do in the nursery even better than it is now.

Finally (and please don’t take this as self-promotion), I would like to say a praise that I finally am able to hold in my hands a book that I have been working on for about four years. I received my copies earlier this week. The title is Peerless Educator: The Life and Work of Isaac Leon Kandel. I am quite proud of the book. Writing it was a labor of love, but it was a labor that lasted almost four years. If you have ambitions to support your dear old Sunday School teacher, click here and hook me up! (Okay, okay, I don’t write these things for my mental health only, I must say!):

http://www3.baylor.edu/%7EWesley_Null/PeerlessEducator.htm

---------------------

I think that takes care of our prayers and praises for this week, everyone. For next Sunday, we will plan to discuss the first chapter of our next book. The title of the book is God’s Answers to Life’s Difficult Questions by Rick Warren. The first chapter is called “How Can I Cope With Stress?”. I think that all of you will enjoy the book! Click here for more about the book:

http://www.amazon.com/Answers-Difficult-Questions-Living-Purpose/dp/0310273021/ref=sr_1_1/102-7570767-8920968?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183945608&sr=1-1

If you are wondering about how to pay for your copy, don’t worry about it. Buying the books is part of what Dana and I like to do as teachers of the class. If you would like to pay for the book, just add that amount to what you give to the church this month.

Dana and I look forward to seeing all of you again next Sunday. May God continue to bless our church and class!

May God bless all of us throughout the week,

Wes and Dana

Class Update--July 1, 2007

Dear Friends:

Good evening, everyone. Happy July! Dana and I hope that all of you have had a good weekend. For those of who you missed it, we enjoyed a terrific “God and Country” worship service this morning. The music was outstanding!

Let’s pray for a safe and enjoyable 4th of July for everyone. Let’s also thank God for all of the men and women who are serving in our armed forces. Let’s say a prayer for their safety and speedy return home.

By the way, our new class book, God’s Answers to Life’s Difficult Questions by Rick Warren is on its way. Amazon has informed me that the books should arrive sometime this week. I should be able to hand them out next Sunday.

Speaking of next Sunday, we will plan to discuss the selection from G. K. Chesterton on pages 333-338 in Devotional Classics. Chesterton is a well-known, powerful writer who has much to teach us. I hope you enjoy what he has to say.

I think that’s all for now, everyone. Dana and I hope that all of you have a great week!

God bless,

Wes and Dana
